Caroline Lobanov Quartet

This new Jazz Quartet plays their arrangements of jazz and pop standards inspirationally. For their latest project "Covered with Soul" Caroline Lobanov and piano player Wim Veenhof selected a number of well known hits from the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

Songs from, among others, Steve Miller, Kate Bush, the Police and Gloria Estefan underwent a musical "transformation". The arrangements written by Caroline Lobanov and piano player Wim Veenhof balance between jazz and pop, and each one has been given its own atmosphere and new life.

Caroline Lobanov’s warm voice and text interpretation add a new dimension to the songs. Wim Veenhof, toured in various theatre productions with cabaret performer Nilgün Yerli, and is a gifted accompanist, arranger and soloist. The approach of Yonga Sun on drums is fresh and creative, and possesses a large variety of dynamics and different playing techniques. Bass player Dion Nijland is extremely alert and supportive, and provides fascinating solos as well.

" ... jazz musicians get their inspiration nowadays from many sources. It is therefore completely logical that Caroline Lobanov consults the hits of her youth.
She does not "improve" the songs through arty arrangements, but allows them to keep their value. They become jazz suddenly, as if that is what they were all along. The rhythm section can play good old fashioned swing in medium tempo, and suddenly take off with the reckless speed of a city pizza delivery courier. The voice seems endlessly flexible, and at the same time remains completely natural.     It is only a minor consideration that the arrangements can sometimes be complicated, and that the musicians operate on such a high professional level...
