LobaNova

With the goal of combining Brazilian music with jazz and pop, in 2001, Caroline Lobanov, together with guitarist Oliver Lob, developed the concept of her band LobaNova, a small group based on acoustical guitar and voice. For this group, they added two percussionists instead of a base player to create a very stimulating rhythm section. Since Oliver Lob’s move to France in 2003, Ronald Veerman replaced him as LobaNova guitarist.

As part of their repertoire, refined and modest Bossa Novas are alternated by swinging sambas that sometimes lead to the stirring rhythmic festivity of the batucada. Baiäo and forró, which are styles from North East Brazil. The group also has their own arrangements of jazz and pop songs, in which Brazilian and Cuban rhythms are mixed with jazz, pop and/or the funk idiom.

The repertoire of LobaNova consists of traditional Brazilian styles. The two percussionists Andrei Lobanov and Janco van der Kaaden create an authentic sound, by using original Brazilian rhythm instruments such as tantan, pandeiro, agogo, tamborim and shakers. Afro-Cuban instruments such as congas, bongos, cajon and Nigerian Udu (a ceramic vase) also belong to the rich percussion arsenal.

The combination of the musical quality and a varied program, plus the pure joy of playing this music, makes a performance of LobaNova a contagious event.

LobaNova has an open and flexible sound, because of the acoustic cast. The result of which, is the band is suitable for festivals, as well as more intimate occasions such as diner-dances, receptions and opening events.

LobaNova also plays at business events, (marriage) festivities, and is able to adapt its repertoire with easy listening and pop classics if required. You can book LobaNova as a duo (voice and guitar), trio or quartet. As a trio the tantan and cajon will be replaced by the bass drum and snare.
